We love the category of projectors that the Samsung Freestyle started, with their portability, ease of setup, and ability to beam images to the ceiling for those times you want to watch in bed. Problem is, they usually don’t have the best picture quality. Now that the category has been around for a bit, though, that’s starting to change with models like the Xgimi Elfin Flip 4K.
Taking on the same design as the original Elfin Flip, the portable projector tucks away neatly as an upright wedge-shaped object when not in use, allowing you to keep it on a shelf, a nightstand, or even the coffee table without having it get in the way. It is, however, much bigger than the original, since this one is designed to deliver a much better overall viewing experience.
The Xgimi Elfin Flip 4K is equipped with a high-performance RGB triple laser light source, so you get better color accuracy, higher contrast ratio, and more consistent brightness over time. It pairs that light source with aerospace-grade precision lenses that, the outfit claims, reduces visual interference and increases clarity by up to 20 percent. As the name implies, it beams images in 4K resolution at screen sizes between 40 inches and 200 inches, so you can go with a smaller screen in cramped rooms and go the full monty if you want a proper home theater setup.
It’s also plenty bright for a portable projector, boasting 1600 ISO lumens. all while coming with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, 110 percent BT.2020 coverage, and ΔE<1 colour accuracy. There’s built-in optical zoom, too, so you can easily resize the screen without having to move the projector. Like other projectors in this category, it’s designed to tilt to easily enable different viewing heights. In this case, it’s able to tilt up to 150 degrees, making it possible to beam images to the ceiling for bedtime viewing.
The Xgimi Elfin Flip 4K has all the smart features people come to expect from modern projectors, including automatic keystone correction, autofocus, intelligent screen alignment, intelligent obstacle avoidance, and intelligent wall color adaptation, so you can beam it on any surface and have the device automatically make adjustments to get the best image possible. For audio, it has a 7W Harman-Kardon speaker built-in, with Dolby Audio support. The outfit claims it’s a viable gaming projector, too, with less than 1ms of latency (1080p gameplay only, higher latency for 4K), VRR and ALLM support, and few custom gaming features (e.g. black equalizer, virtual crosshairs).
For connectivity, it comes with dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, two HDMI slots with eARC support, two USB ports, and one audio out. In case you’d rather not plug in a separate media source, it comes with Google TV built-in, so you can instantly watch shows and movies from your favorite streaming apps right on the device. Other features include a light weight of just 3.4 pounds, a compact Bluetooth remote (runs on AAA batteries), Google Cast/DLNA support, and HDR support (HDR10 and HLG).
